US Open 2022: new health rules, but Novak Djokovic is still out

From 12 June 2022 the new legislation came into force in USA, lightened by the reduction of the effects of the virus on the territory. Currently, in order to circulate freely in the US it will no longer be mandatory to exhibit a tampon certifying negativity to Covid.

A not insignificant change, but for foreigners the rule that allows access only to people who have completed the vaccination cycle has remained. So at this moment Novak Djokovic could not compete in the prestigious events of Toronto, Cincinnati and even the US Open.

A serious damage for the number 3 of the ATP ranking who, at this rate, will have to wait a long time to try to attack the top of the ranking, calculating the 2000 points in safe exit from Wimbledon. Djokovic’s risk is also that of not having the necessary points to get to the ATP Finals in Turin.

Novak Djokovic and the vaccine
It is a risk that he personally decided to take when he clearly chose not to vaccinate against Covid-19.

The theme, the discussion and the controversies are now past things but the consequences are still current and can continue to upset the programming of all those tennis players without the two doses administered. Novak Djokovic has so far experienced a troubled 2022 precisely because of this issue, given that after a period of uncertainty and many unknowns he was not allowed to participate in the Australian Open.

From that very long break the Serbian managed to recover only in Belgrade in his home tournament, also overcoming an illness that had expelled him from the Monte Carlo Master 1000 after the first race. The 35-year-old’s first triumph on the circuit, however, arrived in May at the Internazionali Bnl d’Italia, not giving continuity to Roland Garros (eliminated in the quarter-finals by the Spanish champion Rafael Nadal, who detached him in the Grand Slam title ranking at an altitude of 22).

The problems related to the Covid issue have only been set aside for a moment. Indeed. the Belgrade native is at the window to understand the next moves of a particular nation, the United States of America. State where most of the concrete competitions are concentrated, from the Masters 1000 to the last Grand Slam.
